So, Twitter has gone mainstream, and I’m sure that somewhere technofiles are sitting around scoffing at the rest of the world for being “so, like, yesterday?”
But what does the mainstream-ification of a web app like Twitter mean to your business? Well, there’s a great article at ClickZ today that discusses the pros and cons of Tweeting for your business. To sum it up, the argument goes that Twitter can do great things for your business, but you must approach the use of this “new” PR tool with the same guidelines as you apply to all of your other marketing initiatives. Only then will you know if Tweeting is truly for you.
For those of you still in the dark on Twitter, it is what they call a “microblog”, meaning that it is designed to allow you to publish short captions that describe what it is that you (or your business) is up to. Twitterers around the world can then sign up to “follow” you, getting notified whenever you “tweet” something. You can “follow” your competitors (if they’re as savvy as you), to find out what they’re up to, and you can announce contests, events, etc. with the click of a few buttons.
Twitter is not for all businesses, but it might be right for you. If it is, get tweeting!
